GRISELL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL "Critical Access Hospital"
District No. 1 Ransom, Kansas 67572
Grisell Memorial Hospital was founded in 1928 by Dr. W.S. Grisell, a
pioneer physician. At the time of it's founding it was the only rural hospital in Western
Kansas. In the 1930's Dr. Grisell gave the hospital to a private corporation known as the
Grisell Memorial Hospital Association. In 1948 Ness County Hospital District No. 1 was
organized and took over the hospital operation from the Hospital Association.
The first physician to come to Ransom was Dr. Juliette Caldwell who lived west of Ransom.
She was followed by Dr. Meyers who came with horse and saddlebags. Dr. Meyers made quite a
contribution to Ransom by delivering Mr. L.A. Dubbs, who later in life was an instrumental
part in the organization and maintenance of the Grisell Memorial Hospital. Dr. Meyers was
followed by Dr. W.S. Grisell in 1899 who founded the Grisell Memorial Hospital in 1928.
Later Dr. C.S. McMurray, oseopath from Utica, stayed in the area about 20 years. Dr. D.B.
Parker arrived in Ransom in 1938 and moved on to Ness City in 1944, after the death of
their only physician. The Ransom community was honored to have Dr. Kenneth McCain who came
here in 1949, and practiced for 45 years. He retired in 1994. Dr. Allen McCain joined the
Hospital staff in July 1980. W. J. McDonald. nurse practitioner, joined the staff in June
1992.
