Using Video to Promote your Library

Getting Started
  • Look at other library videos and decide what you like or don’t like.
  • Develop a plan.
  • Gather volunteers, actors, patrons, staff, etc.
  • Develop more of a plan (storyboard, etc.)
  • Gather Equipment.

Tips
  • Start small and work your way up.
  • Practice with the camera
  • Create a plan.  Have an idea of what you want to accomplish.
  • Create a storyboard.   Nothing too complicated.  Just something you can follow that helps you accomplish your plan.

  • Write a script.  Go over the script several times.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to edit and practice.
  • Be careful with background noise.
  • Keep it short , simple, and relevant.  (Probably two and a half to 3 minutes at the most)

  • Experiment.
  • Remember your audience.
  • You don’t need fancy equipment.

  • Library Tour—one of the most popular and probably easiest.

  • Windows Movie Maker – free software that comes with Windows XP and Vista
  • www.jaycut.com – browser based video editor
  • www.animoto.com – can create 30 second slideshows with pictures or video clips.  Can also create longer ones for a charge.
  • www.animasher.com – create animations in your browser
